We experienced a huge fire on Saturday (it was even a first for our mom and dad). We were at home with our dad when he looked out our front window and saw that the fire was getting seriously close (the hill behind our neighborhood was on fire). He packed us up (our mom was with her friend), got Watson and Peyton in their crate, grabbed a few things and headed out the door. Meanwhile, our mom headed back home. They met up at a restaurant and we went home with my mom's friend (our friends' Chloe and Trey's mom). Our parents tried to go back home to get more stuff but were turned away. Our Nonni came down to Yorba Linda to get Watson and Peyton (with the hope also of getting more stuff out of our house). We eventually got picked up by our mom and dad and headed out to our Nonni's house where we camped out till Sunday. We took a long way because all the freeways were closed near our house. Our Nonni was one of the last cars to go through the 91 freeway heading east. The fire had jumped the freeway at that point into Anaheim Hills. While she was on the freeway, the flames were literally up against the freeway. The smoke was terrible, the skies were black and it looked like we had been bombed or something (at least that's what our parents said).
We were not allowed to return home until Sunday. Our parents went back to see if they could get into our house but were turned away because the apartments up the street from us were having "problems." They were smoking and there were firetrucks going back up the street.
We got home around 4:30pm. The air was not great, it was hot and it was never so good to be home. We had no damage and we still had a home. A lot of the neighborhoods had many homes go down. A couple of our parks are gone. The air is still bad, but we are grateful to have a home, our pets, our toys, our belongings.
We went to Target that night to get a couple of air purifiers and saw 3 firetrucks in the parking lot. We talked to the firefighters (they even showed us their trucks). They were all from at least an hour away (thank you Redondo Beach, El Segundo and Hermosa Beach Fire Depts.). We thanked them for helping save our neighborhood.
This morning, we and our mom drove up the street to see the damage. Their were so many homes burned to the ground. Terribly sad and humbling. Made us appreciate what we have.
Thanks for all the thoughts everyone!
Here is a picture early on on Saturday. The pic was taken about 3 miles away from our house at a shopping center.
